Live Birding over the Internet

You can now go Birding on your computer! You can get live video of birds and even a close up view of the inside of their nests over the Internet. This trend is becoming very popular on web sites that have web cams recording threatened birds breeding success or just watching backyard bird feeders. These BirdCams can now let you use your computer to have a close-up "A Bird's Eye View". We've started a list of the sites you can surf on the Internet to go "Click-Birding".

Some things to know:
The BirdCam pop-up windows are examples of where "bigger is not necessarily better". If they pop-up small; that's ok. You will most likely get a better video if you keep the window small because of the amount of dots per inch that the camera is recording and transmitting.

Some birdcams are running in a video streaming mode where the picture is almost continuous and others are on still image delay with the camera recording an image every 5 seconds (Birds look a little jumpy, but it can be fun). With the video streaming mode you have to have the software to enable your computer to run the video, programs like RealOne Player or Windows Media Player are good to use. Most of the sites will offer you a link to download the free software if you do not already have it in order to get up and running.

If you know of others that we should add to our list, please email their url address to us. Since many of these BirdCams are run by non-profit organizations, please lend your support to their organizations.

NOTE: THE ONGOING NEST CAM ACTION HAPPENS SO FAST DAY PER DAY THAT WE WILL NOT BE UP TO THE MINUTE ON FACTS LIKE "HOW MANY EGGS?" FIND YOUR FAVORITES AND RETURN TO THEM TO FIND THE UPDATES. (Updated link check May 13, 2014)
